Personal Passion
If there is any breaking news in the entertainment sphere, there is a high likelihood I have already conducted in-depth research into the topic.
From reality tv to popular trends on social media to Beyoncé’s latest drop, I love all things pop culture. My passion for it is rooted its sociological ties. There is so much one can learn about cultures, social structures, identity, and values through consuming pop culture media.
In addition, it can offer a positive form of escapism that can influence personal growth. I see myself as a better, well-rounded person because of pop culture’s inspiration and comfort it brings me.
Some of my favorite TV Shows:
1
Real Housewives Franchise

The Real Housewives has a cult-like following for a reason. Offering a peek into the lives of high society in affluent areas like Atlanta, Beverly Hills, and Salt Lake City, you are able to see the life of today's socialites. Beyond the drama, I love seeing the complexities of female friendships coupled with the influence of money and power dynamics. Despite their wealth, the women face everyday challenges in their lives and relationships. This show truly personifies “Mo’ money, mo’ problems.”
2
Insecure

Insecure was a pivotal show during my college years, following Issa Dee, a near 30-something navigating uncertainties in friendship, career, and societal influences. It highlights how our insecurities play a bigger role in our lives than we admit and the journey of facing them. Through this series, I see myself and gain a new perspective with each rewatch.
3
Scandal

A Shonda Rhimes classic! This show dramatizes the intertwining of government and personal life. Kerry Washington stars as Olivia Pope, a high-powered “fixer” who can re-write others’ realities but struggles to control her own. The series explores the intersectionality of being a Black woman, Olivia’s complicated love interest, and her toxic upbringing, all against the backdrop of real-world government conspiracies. It's a must-watch for lovers of drama and edge-of-your-seat plot twists!
A Pop Culture Moment Favorite:
"Beychella"
Beyoncé’s 2019 Coachella headlining shows, coined "Beychella" by DJ Khaled, were a cultural reset. Her performances paid homage to HBCU culture, an experience she witnessed while growing up in Houston, Texas. Beyoncé's ability to weave her discography with HBCU and Black cultural identity was impeccable, including elements like marching bands, majorette dancers, and Black Greek life and even incorporating members of the HBCU community into her performance.
Beyoncé, as always, elevated the performance bar for Coachella from the minute she walked out onto the stage to her first-hit single, "Crazy in Love." Her performance sparked interest in HBCUs, highlighting the social and cultural impact of her hard work. Beyond the stage, she awarded four scholarships to students across the 107 HBCUs for the 2018-2019 school year. A performance often imitated, but could never be duplicated because of her dedication and commitment that is truly inspirational. You can experience this groundbreaking performance in her documentary, Homecoming, on Netflix.
As a proud HBCU graduate, words cannot describe the pride I felt seeing something so meaningful to me, displayed for the world to see. I even had the privilege of attending the premiere during my senior year at Howard University, a memory I will forever cherish.
